The Weightlifting Soprano

It ain't over til the FIT lady sings!

Katherine Merryman Soprano, Weightlifter

Nutrition

85% of fitness happens in the kitchen. Educate yourself. Work with a trainer and sports nutritionist.

Your instrument - your voice - is an inseparable part of your body. The better your nutrition, the better your voice. A singer must be the whole package.

The discipline that performers must demand of themselves is the same that  weightlifters and serious athletes of any kind must also demand of themselves.

Sing strong.

Be strong.

Choose strong.

The fitter I am, the better I sing.

While practicing, hold a 10 to 15-pound free weight in each hand; let them dangle at each side.

Now SING and notice how the weights' presence does not allow you to give into the tension we all know and do not love when it tries to creep into our shoulders and neck in our upper register and passaggio. Without the weights, we start to clench our shoulders, but with the weights, we immediately sense when we start to succumb to the tension...and stop it in its tracks.

LIFE LESSON: What do you need to figuratively hold to cause you to let go of what keeps you from your goals? Holding the right thing allows you to consciously let go of the wrong thing.

Now hit the gym!
